Tribal Kuchi Necklace (**SOLD**)
This stunning tribal necklace from the Kuchi nomads of Afghanistan is made of a traditional, coin-base alloy metal called "gillet". The centrepiece measures 8.5” x 8.5” and is surrounded by white seashells. The oval stone on the center is brown Jasper. This extraordinary tribal necklace is further adorned with thimbles hanging on glass bead strings below the large centrepiece. The back of the necklace is covered with blue velvet like fabric and the centrepiece is suspended from velvet fabric, which is adorned with antique coins. Each of the coins has a different Arabic inscription, pictures and dates on them. These necklaces were worn by the Kuchi (nomad) women of Afghanistan as large breastplates and were usually given to them as dowry gifts by the groom’s family. The necklace measures approximately 26” from the top to bottom of the tassels. Unique and authentic tribal pieces like this one are very hard to find. This stunning tribal necklace originates from the nomadic Kuchi tribes of Afghanistan. Kuchi’ is a term that is generally used to describe the transhumant or nomadic pastoralists of Afghanistan. Their jewelry and ornaments have a distinctive style and the use of granulated silver and glass cabochons is common. The necklace is adorned with red & blue cabochons on silver background. The necklace is further adorned with detailed granulation work around the glass settings. The pendants of the necklace are actually antique silver coins, which the Kuchi nomads have gathered from Persian, Pakistani and British soldiers during the wars and their migrations. The different coins are decorated and modified to adorn this magnificent necklace. Most of the coins are late 19th century originating from Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and England. This is an authentic, late 19th century Kuchi necklace and is made of high-grade silver. Original Kuchi antiques like this one are extremely hard to find in today’s market. The surface of the silver has a rich patina from age and wear and this enormous necklace weighs 1004 grams.
